Dr Peter J. Timoney Receives UCD Alumni Award in Health and Agricultural Sciences 2025

Dr Peter J. Timoney (MVB 1964) has been awarded the 2025 UCD Alumni Award in Health and Agricultural Sciences in recognition of his outstanding global contributions to equine veterinary science.

A world-leading authority on equine infectious diseases, Dr Timoney’s career spans over five decades of visionary leadership, groundbreaking research, and international collaboration. His work has had a profound impact on the management and prevention of equine diseases worldwide, including equine viral arteritis, contagious equine metritis, equine herpesviruses, and equine encephalomyelitis.

Dr Timoney has held esteemed positions across Ireland and the United States, including the Irish Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Research Laboratory, the Irish Equine Centre, and Cornell University. In 1983, he joined the University of Kentucky, where he served as Director of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Centre and held the Frederick Van Lennep Endowed Chair in Equine Veterinary Science until his retirement in 2022.

Throughout his career, Dr Timoney has played a pivotal role in shaping global equine health policy and research. He is a past president of the World Equine Veterinary Association, a member of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) International Horse Sports Confederation Technical Committee, and a dedicated contributor to veterinary science through extensive publications and international leadership.

His remarkable achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.

Dr Timoney was presented with his award by current student Rebecca Morrow at a Gala Event featuring host Pat Kenny on 17th October.
