Una Europa Language Café

A group of students learning a language.

The Una Europa Language Café is a multicultural and multilingual programme that provides all UCD students the opportunity to practice speaking German, Italian, Finnish, Polish, Dutch, Spanish, French, English or Irish in an informal setting.

The Language Cafés are led by the Language Guides, student volunteers (native or fluent C1 speakers) who facilitate conversations using non-formal education methods. The programme promotes language development, intercultural exchange and social interaction, allowing students to improve their language skills, make new friends and learn about different cultures.

When does the Language Café take place?

The Language Café takes place in Autumn and Spring trimesters. The sessions are held once a week for 60 minutes at the UCD Global Lounge. The sessions are typically scheduled between late afternoon and early evening and do not occur on public holidays, weekends or lecture-free periods. The exact day and time of the sessions is agreed upon at the start of each trimester and remains consistent throughout.

Who can apply to volunteer as a Language Guide?

All UCD students (full-time, part-time, exchange) can apply, no matter their study programme, level or year of study, once they are native or fluent C1 speakers in the language they wish to moderate, as well as available to moderate the sessions for the duration of the programme.

All Language Guides will receive a confirmation of their volunteering activity in the form of a certificate or LinkedIn review. This volunteer activity is also eligible for the UCD Advantage Award.

Who can apply to participate in the programme?

All UCD students (full-time, part-time, exchange), no matter their study programme, level or year of study and no matter their proficiency level in the language they wish to practice speaking. Beginners are as welcome as intermediate and advanced language users.

How to apply?

The applications for the Language Guides open in September for Autumn trimester and January for the Spring trimester.

The applications for participants open in October for Autumn trimester and February for the Spring trimester.
