New Lecturer Joins Civil Engineering Infrastructure Programme

I am Dr. Saptarshi Sen, from the City of Joy, Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal and the 3rd largest metropolitan city of India. I have been passionate about vehicles, roads and highways from my childhood, and therefore, I have pursued my career in the field of Transportation Engineering since the beginning of my professional education. Completed my Master's of Technology programme in Transportation Engineering in 2016 from National Institute of Technology Silchar, Assam, India and PhD in Civil Engineering with specialisation in Transportation Engineering in 2022 from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, West Bengal, India, one of the premier institutes of India. I worked as a senior researcher in another premier institute of India, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where I have been working closely with Prof. Bhargab Maitra on several transportation planning and road safety projects.
In 2023, I joined UCD School of Civil Engineering as a postdoctoral researcher for a Nexsys project with Dr. Paraic Carroll, Assistant Prof. in the University of Melbourne (former Asst. Prof. in UCD School of Civil Engineering) and worked on travel behaviour and mode choice of people for long-distance trips in Ireland. After a year, I was offered the position of CDIC lecturer in transportation which I happily accepted and joined in September 2024.
Some broad areas of my research interests are as follows:
- Sustainable Transport - Public and Active Transport
- Travel Behaviour
- Accessibility
- Road Safety
- Transport Policy
In UCD, I am currently teaching the Highway Engineering module in Spring along with Computer Applications in Civil Engineering. In CDIC, I will be teaching modules covering Transportation Planning and Policy, Traffic Engineering and Highway Engineering. I am very excited to go to China, explore the country, meet and understand the culture of the people in China, teach and interact with the students there and look out for research collaborations.
Welcome to CDIC, Saptarshi!
