Ongoing Research Projects

The Military Welfare History Network

Founded in 2019 and based at the UCD Centre for War Studies, the Military Welfare History Network has brought together hundreds of researchers and scholars from around the world whose scholarship engages with the 'academic perspective' of military welfare history. Together they provide fact-based, critical historical analysis of military welfare, benefits and provisions for those in uniform and their families to both evaluate the past and to influence contemporary military and civilian systems of welfare and care and social policies.

The Network was founded and it still co-ordinated by Dr Paul Huddie and its UCD members include (amongst others):

Sofya Anisimova

Jack Kavanagh

Julie M. Powell

It hosted both its first and second (opens in a new window)international conferences at UCD in 2021 and 2023; from which both a special issue of War & Society (Fall 2023) and an edited volume (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026) were the (opens in a new window)outputs. Several keynotes from these events were also recorded and can be listened to via the UCD HistoryHub podcast (opens in a new window)here.

Full details about the Network's members, affiliates, events and publications can be found at:
