Participatory data collection of the occupational and urban hazards facing delivery bicycle riders (Portuguese)

Voice of the Cavaleiro

Voice of the Cavaleiro is a participatory data collection of the occupational and urban hazards facing delivery bicycle riders for

  • increased workers’ rights and work protections
  • changes to urban built environment
  • and empower migrant, refugee, and marginalised communities

In Dublin, the delivery riders are primarily migrants and refugees who work in Europe’s most traffic-congested city--a city not designed for cycling--all while they also face precarious working and housing conditions, racism, violence, and a growing anti-migrant movement. (Link to  Dublin Deliveroo page)

To document the most pressing occupational and urban hazards experienced by the riders in the city:

Riders are fitting their bicycles with environmental hazard sensors, such as those to detect proximity of automobiles, PM and N02 pollution and noise. (Link to The Rider Collected Data page)

Riders are wearing technologies to measure physiological biomarkers of stress. (Link to The Rider Collected Data page)

Riders are co-creating an online map where they can share the locations of collisions, areas where the city’s built environment is hazardous, where there are assets for delivering, and where riders have experienced racism, violence, and felt unsafe. (Link to The RIder Map of Dublin)

This rider collected data aims for policy change (such as improved worker rights) and improvements in the built environment (such as more cycling infrastructure).

This project can further build that trust and collaboration between members of this often-marginalised group, scientists, and the broader public.

Be on the lookout for a public exhibition of this study with the participating riders.
