Project Background
The BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device) LockDown Browser Proof of Concept project, a component of the Online Assessment Initiative 2022-24, is a response to the evolving assessment requirements at UCD. Recognising the changing nature of assessments and the prevalence of personal devices among students, the project aims to evaluate these technological assets within UCD’s assessment processes. The project aims to leverage the widespread use of student-owned devices and also seeks to evaluate the flexibility and academic integrity of invigilated, on-campus digital exams.
The primary goal of the project is to establish a proof of concept regarding BYOD exams using lockdown browser software. It will assess the specific needs and prerequisites for their successful implementation, starting with a selection of modules that conduct in-trimester exams. This initial focus on smaller-scale examinations will aid in understanding the requirements and exploring the potential for scaling BYOD exams for larger, more complex scenarios, including end-of-trimester exam schedules.
Project Report
LockDown Browser Proof of Concept
The LockDown Browser Proof of Concept was initiated to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing a secure online assessment solution to enhance academic integrity in Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) exams on campus. The report outlines the market research, implementation and risk management activities that have been conducted, followed by pilot exams and analysis. This exploratory proof of concept, while limited in scope, yielded promising results that merit careful
consideration.
