UCD Smarter Travel Group organises cycle maintenance workshops
Monday, 7 July, 2025
UCD Sustainability recently funded cycle training workshops on campus, organised by UCD Smarter Travel Group and delivered by Colm Sevastopulo of Dublin Bay Cycling.
Participants said it helped improve their confidence on the road and their general knowledge about bike maintenance.
One woman’s almost hour-long commute is now “sixteen minutes, door to door”.
The mostly female attendance over two workshops reflects recent research showing 56% of adults in Ireland said safety concerns stopped them from cycling, with women 26.5% likelier than men to cite safety concerns as a barrier (62% vs 49%).
This same survey, published in May 2025, found that 82% of Irish adults rarely or never cycle and just 13% said they cycled weekly. This compares to 24% of EU citizens who cycle weekly (47% of Danes and 42% of Finns).*
Thanks to everyone who came along and to Colm for his expertise - and that very on-brand T-shirt!
