Professor Tasman Crowe

VP for Sustainability

Professor Crowe completed a degree in Zoology from Bristol University and a PhD in marine ecology at the University of Sydney before carrying out postdoctoral research in Australia, Indonesia, Vanuatu and Southampton. He joined UCD in 2001 and has served as Director of the UCD Earth Institute, Associate Dean of Science, Chair of the Liberal Arts and Science Programme Board and co-founded UCD’s BSc in Sustainability.

Prof. Crowe was appointed chair of Ireland’s National Biodiversity Forum and of an advisory group to government on the expansion of Ireland’s network of Marine Protected Areas. He also served as President of the European Marine Biology Symposium.

Widely collaborating and leading on interdisciplinary research projects on marine ecosystems and their conservation and management, Prof. Crowe has published over 120 research articles and received more than €4.8 million in research funding. He has supervised 24 PhD students to completion and mentored 22 postdoctoral researchers.

Louise Griffin

UCD Sustainability Manager

Before taking up this role in January 2024, Louise worked for two years as Operations and Sustainability Project Officer at the Irish Universities Association. Prior to that she spent seven years in a number of roles in UCD, including two years as Sustainable Development Goals Project Officer.

Louise manages everything from UCD Sustainability’s reporting to the day-to-day running of the Unit. Louise received an Award for Academic Excellence from Dublin City University for her First Class MSc in Management for Sustainable Development (2021).

Patrice Harrington

Sustainability Communications Officer

Patrice is a journalist and communications professional with over 20 years’ experience in newspapers and over five years promoting research and initiatives in UCD with words, podcasts and video. She has a degree in Journalism from DCU and further qualifications in Digital Marketing (Digital Marketing Institute), User Experience (DCU), Strategic Internal Communications (PR Institute of Ireland) and mobile video storytelling (Rathdown Media). Hers is a part-time role in UCD Sustainability.

Programme Director

Michael is a strategic leader with deep experience in shaping and delivering institutional transformation at UCD. Over more than two decades, he has worked across academic and professional domains to align people, systems and strategy—bringing clarity to complexity and turning ideas into action. His work has spanned operational redesign, digital transformation and cultural change, always grounded in a people-centred approach. Now part of UCD’s Sustainability Unit, he continues to focus on enabling the university to meet its strategic goals through collaboration, insight and purposeful delivery.

Ash Middleton

Senior Executive Assistant

Ash brings over seven years of experience from UCD Estate Services, where she led key sustainability initiatives including the UCD Green Campus programme and the University’s waste management strategy. With a background in project management, stakeholder engagement and communications, she has championed cross-campus collaboration on environmental awareness, student-led projects and strategic sustainability goals.

In her role as Senior Executive Assistant with the Sustainability Unit, Ash supports the development and delivery of impactful initiatives aligned with UCD’s broader commitment to climate action and sustainable development.

Mags Carey

Health Promotion Coordinator

Mags is the Health Promotion Coordinator at UCD where she manages the Healthy UCD unit, which has responsibility for the implementation of the Healthy Campus Framework. She holds a degree in Applied Science and Master’s Degrees in both Obesity and Weight Management and Public Health Nutrition, with keen research interests in these areas. She is an IUHPE certified Health Promotion Practitioner, as well as being PRINCE2 certified, having worked as an IT Project Manager for over 15 years, with a proven track record of successful project delivery. With a particular interest in collaborations across disciplines, Mags’s work is centred on a whole-settings approach to health and wellbeing, aimed at creating a supportive, sustainable and connected environment for studying, working and living.

Giulia Schilirò

Sustainability Student Ambassador – Communications Lead

Giulia recently graduated with First Class Honours in BSc Sustainability at UCD and is now pursuing an MSc in Environmental Policy. She is passionate about using communication to make sustainability more accessible and engaging for diverse communities. As a Sustainability Student Ambassador, Giulia serves as Communications Lead, helping to bridge the gap between UCD’s institutional sustainability efforts and the student experience.

Her previous experience includes working on the BRIGHT project with UCD’s School of Architecture and Environmental Policy, where she developed a dissemination strategy to improve public understanding and uptake of home energy retrofitting, and interning with the UCD Biodiversity Sub-group to design a pilot signage project for campus green spaces.

Alongside her studies, Giulia is Marketing Lead for UCD Circular, a student-led initiative promoting circular practices on campus, and Social Media Manager for the UCD Sustainability Society.
