It is with great sorrow that we learn of the passing of Gerry Horkan, a beloved figure at University College Dublin (UCD) and a true pillar of the institution. Gerry's lifelong dedication to UCD, both as a student and later as a key administrative and volunteer leader, leaves a legacy that will be remembered fondly by many.
As a student at UCD, Gerry made a lasting impact, serving as Vice-President and Secretary of the Students' Representative Council, the precursor to the current Student Union. His leadership extended beyond academics, as he captained both the UCD Soccer Club and Badminton Club, demonstrating his passion for student life and sport.
Gerry's contributions to UCD continued after his graduation. Following a short spell in the private sector Gerry returned to UCD in 1975 as the Senior Administrative Officer for the Student Union, where he managed the Union's finances and supported a wide range of student activities. He played an instrumental role in shaping UCD’s student life, becoming the first Chairperson of the President's Residences Committee, a position he held for over a decade. His commitment to student affairs was also reflected in his role as a founding member of the Student Consultative Forum, now known as the Student Activities Committee.
A passionate advocate for students, Gerry’s influence extended into volunteer work. He was a central figure in UCD Soccer Club, serving as President until his passing, having previously held the role of Chairman for 32 years. His leadership in the UCD Athletic Union Council (AUC, governing body for sports club), where he was Honorary Secretary for 26 years and President from 2009 to 2018, further solidified his role as a key figure in student sport at UCD.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, the AUC established the "Gerry Horkan Student Club Administrator of the Year Award," an annual accolade presented to an exemplary student. Gerry’s dedication to fostering student development, both through sport and student life, left an indelible mark on thousands of students, and his legacy will continue to inspire.
Suzanne Bailey, UCD Sports Development Manager, commented on Gerry’s passing, remembering him as a selfless champion for students and student sport. His wisdom, guidance, and mentorship touched the lives of many, and his contributions helped shape the development of key life skills in young people who engaged with him.
Our deepest condolences go to Gerry’s family, especially his wife, Mary, during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
