UCD Honohan and Ad Astra Doctoral Scholarships: Now Open for Applications!

Politics and International Relations Programme Structure

In addition to writing the PhD thesis, SPIRe PhD students in Politics and International Relations must complete 50 credits of coursework, at least 40 of which should be completed by the time of the transfer to Stage II, which takes place within 12-18 months on the program.

Of these 50 credits, 30 will be devoted to required methodologically oriented courses (focusing on research design, quantitative methods and qualitative methods). The remaining 20 required credits (and any additional credits beyond 50) can be filled with modules selected in consultation with the student's supervisor.

* Applications currently being accepted for the UCD Honohan Doctoral Scholarship and two UCD Ad Astra Doctoral Scholarships *

Additional and Audit Modules

Additional Modules

There are a range of additional discipline-specific and other modules across the university that are available to graduate research students. Click here to access these modules.

Auditing Modules

Students enrolled to any graduate programme at University College Dublin have the opportunity to enrol to a module for Audit from within the list of modules offered by the University. A student may audit a module if they wish to attend the module but not gain any credits for the module. This means that they do not receive a grade for the module, but the module will appear on the student’s transcript as having been audited.

Students must seek the permission of the relevant Module Coordinator in order to do this, as well as the Programme Coordinator for the programme in which the student is enrolled.

The registration process for this will also fall under Graduate Studies.
