Is ollamh emeritus é Sture Ureland sa roinn teangeolaíochta in Ollscoil Mannheim sa Ghearmáin. Sochtheangeolaí é, a rinne speisialtóireacht in úsáid na dteangacha caighdeánacha i gceantair mhionlaigh.

Biographical History and Administrative History
Sture Ureland is an emeritus professor in the linguistics department of University of Mannheim, Germany. A sociolinguist, he specialised in the penetration of Standard Languages in minority areas.
The aim of the project was to inspect how well a bilingual programme in a minority area preserves and promotes bilingual ability, with reference to writing both in the minority and majority language. It was part of a wider project: Eurolinguistic research on minority languages in Europe, that took place in the following regions: Gaeltacht Connemara (Ireland), Alsace (France), The Grissons (Switzerland), South Tyrol (Italy) and the City of Vilnius (Lithuania).

This collection was donated to the UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore to be added to the Irish Dialect Archive which is held in UCD Library Special Collections in April 2019.

Scoil Mhícheál Naofa & Coláiste Chroí Mhuire (An Spidéal), Scoil Náisiúnta an Ghoirt Mhóir (An Gort Mór), Scoil Náisiúnta Mhuire (Rosmuc), Scoil Mhic Dara & Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin (An Cheathrú Rua), Scoil Sailearna (Indreabhán), Scoil Mhuire (Tuairín) Scoil Cholmchille (Ros an Mhíl) agus St James’ National School (Páirc na dTor), scoil lán-Bhéarla lasmuigh den Ghaeltacht a bhí á húsáid mar chóimheastóir. Iarradh ar na daltaí breathnú ar bhalbhscannán. Díreach ina dhiaidh, iarradh orthuscéal an scannáin a insint arís as Gaeilge agus as Béarla i bhfoirm aiste.
Bhí an tOllamh Sture Ureland ag súil go mbeadh marcanna ní b’fhearr faighte ag scríobh na Gaeilge ag na daltaí a dúirt gur labhair siad Gaeilge ‘go minic’ sa bhaile agus go mbeadh marcanna ní ba mheasa ag na mic léinn a dúirt gur labhair siad Gaeilge ‘go hannamh’ nó nár labhair Gaeilge sa bhaile ar chor ar bith.
Scope and Content
This collection contains essays written by pupils from 10 schools in the Connemara Gaeltacht. Scoil Mhícheál Naofa & Coláiste Chroí Mhuire (Spiddle), Scoil Náisiúnta an Ghoirt Mhóir (Gortmore), Scoil Náisiúnta Mhuire (Rosmuck), Scoil Mhic Dara & Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin (Carrowroe), Scoil Sailearna (Inveran), Scoil Mhuire (Tuareen), Scoil Cholmchille (Rossaveal) and St James’ National School (Bushy Park), a monolingual English speaking school outside of the Gaeltacht that was used as a control group. The project involved the students being shown a silent movie and being asked to retell the contents of the film in both Irish and English immediately after viewing.
Professor Sture Ureland was working on the assumption that the pupils who claimed to speak Irish “often” at home would perform better or receive better marks in written Irish and the pupils who claim to speak Irish “seldom” or “never” would receive worse results.
