Gabriel Beranger (1729-1817).
Biographical History
- Gabriel Beranger was born in the Netherlands. He moved to Dublin in 1750.
- During the 1760s Beranger sketched ruins and standing buildings and other sites of interest in the Dublin area.
- He exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1763 to 1768, contributing landscapes, sea pieces, and ‘medleys’.
- In 1773 Beranger and another artist, Angelo Bigari, made a tour of western Ireland in 1779.
Source of Acquisition
Purchased by UCD in 1968-9.
Scope and Content
- 39 18th century watercolour drawings, done by or for Gabriel Beranger, and known as the ‘Beranger’ watercolours.
- The subjects of the drawings are antiquarian sites containing general views and details of, principally, churches, abbeys and castles.
- There is a small amount of pre-historic subjects.
