This proposal aims to determine detailed emission factors (EF) for residential-scale combustion of solid fuels, typical of those used in Ireland, in a stove and in an open fireplace.
The project will develop a test protocol and establish a high-quality, secure facility for experiments. It will generate a comprehensive database of emissions from six, commonly-used, solid fuels in Ireland, including wood logs (seasoned and wet), and manufactured fuels.
The project will characterise the particles and gases emitted from these fuels; provide a complete set of emission factors for each fuel tested in both an open fireplace and a typical stove; and make these results available via the public EPA Research Data Archive. It will also review PM measurement standards and methodologies in national solid fuel legislation, to propose updated methods for consistent and comparable emissions testing.
