Understanding Carer Harm

 (opens in a new window)Dr Sarah Donnelly, Assistant Professor of Social Work, School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice in partnership with Family Carers Ireland recently launched their ‘Understanding Carer Harm’ research report along with a number of information booklets for family carers and best practice considerations for professionals- this project was funded by an Irish Research Council New Foundations Award. Carer harm is when carers experience violence or become subject to controlling or coercive behaviour, either on an incidental or systematic basis, resulting in physical, emotional or psychological harm.  

In order to raise awareness and continue the conversation on this important topic, we are hosting two webinars in May and June. This webinar will be of interest to practitioners, family carers, service providers, policy makers and researchers.

Webinar 1 will take place on Wednesday 24th May 2-4pm. It will focus on the topic of 'Understanding Carer Harm' and Sarah will present findings from the research she has carried out. The presentation of findings will be followed by a panel discussion ocused on the implications for policy and practice responses in the Irish context that will include the following panellists:

Webinar 2 will take place on Thursday 8th June 10-12pm. This webinar will explore the concept of carer harm taking more of a global perspective to broaden out the conversation beyond the Irish context. Dr Sarah Donnelly will give a brief presentation on her recent work that examined carer harm. This will be followed by a presentation by Amanda Warburton Wynn (opens in a new window)(www.awdaconsultancy.com) who will present on her recent work on carers and domestic abuse.
