Cinema Memories as Transnational Practices: A Qualitative Study with Latin American Women in Barcelona and Milan
In this talk, I will discuss the findings of a qualitative research project exploring the memories and habits of cinema-going and film consumption of an intergenerational group of Latin American women living in Barcelona and Milan. The study is based on 35 in-depth interviews with participants from different countries, socio-cultural backgrounds and experiences of migration, to investigate the role of film in negotiating and reflecting ideas of belonging, distance and proximity in the everyday. In the first part of the presentation, I will introduce the study, its methodology and main theoretical framework, concentrating on issues of positionality and outlining the interdisciplinary framework inspiring this research, at the intersection of memory, film, and migration studies. In the second part, I will offer a thematic analysis of some extracts from the interviews in order to illustrate the interplay between transnational film-viewing practices and migration.
