Reading and Workshop by Gabrielle Alioth
We were delighted to welcome back the Swiss writer Gabrielle Alioth to UCD on Tuesday 30 November, for a reading and workshop class at the final-year module "Advanced Translation: German to English". Gabrielle spoke about and read from her recently-published novel,
Die Überlebenden (
The Survivors), from some of her poems, and was interested in the translations of a passage from her novel done by the students.
Die Überlebenden tells of a Swiss family in the 20th century and how particular family members coped with different kinds of violence, from the external violence of the war to the more subliminal violence from the patriarch figure. “This is a moving novel about silence in families, reflections of the past and the search for one’s own truth”.
