Das gerettete Kind by Renate Ahrens

We are thrilled to welcome acclaimed German author, Renate Ahrens, to our School on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 April. The author of 7 novels, nigh on 20 children’s books, and several plays, her latest novel, Das gerettete Kind was published only last month with Droemer Verlag in Munich.

Set in Dublin and Hamburg, it pieces together the painful life-story of Irma (86), who was sent by her Jewish parents on the Kindertransport to England and then Northern Ireland. Marrying and settling in Dublin, she represses her traumatic childhood, until learning that her granddaughter has a boyfriend from Hamburg. The novel is a gradual uncovering of past memories, told via dreams and diary entries, that bring about self-healing, as well as reconciliation with her own daughter.

Renate Ahrens will read from her novel at the final-year module “German Prose Narratives Since the Fall of the Wall” on Wednesday, 13-14:00, in room A106 Arts Building, and will consider issues of translation at the module “Translating Contemporary Texts (German-English: Advanced)” on Thursday, 10-11:00, in room B101 Arts Building.
