LING 30150 Research

This 5-credit independent research module is intended for Stage 3 Linguistics Majors who are interested in pursuing a project on a particular linguistic topic of their choice. The research and the final paper (3,000-5,000 words) will be completed during the Spring Trimester.

Pre-requisites: Students wishing to register for this module are required to:

  • have a minimum Stage 2 GPA of 3.08, 
  • a minimum of a B+ in a Stage 2 module that represents or is closely allied to their area of interest, and 
  • have the agreement of the relevant member of the Linguistics faculty as supervisor.

Assessment: Specified research skills 25%, Final paper 75%  

How do I sign up for this module?

  1. Identify a broad topic.
  2. Identify a member of the Linguistics faculty who could supervise the topic and discuss your ideas with them during Trimester 1. If they agree to supervise the project, prepare a research proposal (see below).
  3. Submit the research proposal to the potential supervisor
  4. The proposal will be reviewed.
  5. If your research proposal is accepted, you will be (manually) registered to Ling30150.

Research Proposal (2-3 pages):

  • Outline the broad topic of the research and broad issues.
  • Identify your precise aim and research question(s).
  • Discuss the approach that you want to take (research methods, frameworks etc.)
  • Identify the relevant background literature.
