Professor Thomas Joseph Nolan (1888-1952) was born in Dublin. In 1906 he was awarded the Archbishop Walsh university scholarship in science and entered UCD where he studied chemistry and experimental physics. He graduated in 1909 with first-class honours in both subjects. Professor Nolan continued his education in UCD with a postgraduate course in chemistry and experimental physics receiving the first M.Sc. in chemistry granted by the NUI in 1912. He carried out research in University College London, the University of Marburg and the Kaiser Wilhelm Institut in Berlin. His research areas were diverse, but for 13 years he focused on investigating the chemical constituent of lichens in Irelands.
