Professor Thomas E. Nevin

Professor Thomas Edwin Nevin (1906-1986) was born in Bristol, UK.  He received an entrance scholarship to UCD in 1924 and received his BSc in experimental physics and mathematical physics in 1927.  After completing his MSc in UCD in 1928, under the supervision of Professor JJ Nolan, he was awarded the 1851 Exhibition research scholarship for Ireland.  He studied spectroscopy in Imperial College, London from 1929 to 1931.  In 1931 Professor Nevin joined UCD in the department of experimental physics.  He was later appointed to a new statutory lectureship in experimental physics in 1945 and in 1952 was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics until his retirement in 1976.  Professor Nevin served as Faculty of Science Dean from 1963 to 1976, and was instrumental in the move of the Faculty from Earlsfort Terrace to the new Belfield campus.  Professor Nevin was also appointed acting president of UCD on the retirement of Professor Jeremiah J. Hogan in 1976 until the position was filled a few months later.
