Professor Michael J. Kennedy

Michael John Kennedy (1940-2013), known universally as ‘Ben’, was born in London, UK.  His university education was at Trinity College Dublin where he took his BA (Mod) degree and his PhD in geology.  On completing his PhD in 1966 he was awarded a National Research Council of Canada postdoctoral fellowship to carry out research at the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa.  In 1980 Professor Kennedy took up the Chair of Geology at UCD and the Headship of the Department of Geology.  In 1999, he was elected Dean of Science at UCD, a position he held until his retirement in 2005.
