Professor Joseph Doyle

Professor Joseph Doyle (1891-1974) was born in Glasgow, UK.  He was educated at UCD, graduating in biology in 1910, after which he spent research time in Hamburg.  He joined the staff of the biology department in UCD in 1913.  In 1924 Professor Doyle was appointed to the newly founded chair of botany and was appointed as Dean of Faculty of Science in 1945 and served in this position until 1951.  During his career he became known for his work on the reproductive biology of conifers.  In 1942 he was awarded the Boyle medal of the Royal Dublin Society (RDS), of which he was vice-president from 1968 until his passing in 1974.  Professor Doyle retired from UCD in 1961.
