Professor Hugh Ryan

Professor Hugh Ryan (1873-1931) was born in Dolla near Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.  Professor Ryan attended Queen’s College Galway on a scholarship to study medicine where his chemistry teacher Professor Alfred Senir urged him to give up his medical studies and concentrate on science.  In 1895 Professor Ryan graduated with first place in experimental science from the Royal University and was later awarded an MA in chemistry and physics and a gold medal in 1897.  From 1897-1899 he continued his postgraduate research in Berlin.  Professor Ryan became an assistant professor of chemistry in the Catholic University School of Medicine and in University College in 1899.  He was appointed to professor later that year after sitting his D.Sc. in chemistry by examination.  In 1900 Professor Ryan was appointed fellow of the Royal University.  Professor Ryan was appointed as the first professor of chemistry in UCD after the founding of the NUI in 1908, a position he held until his death.  In 1924 the Irish Government appointed Professor Ryan to the new position of state chemist.  Professor Ryan served as Dean of Science from 1925-1930.  The Hugh Ryan commemorative medal was established and is awarded to an undergraduate UCD chemistry student every year.
