Conversations of Transition: Enhancing Research Culture through Engaged Participatory Research on Student-Alumni Career Journeys

This initiative, funded by JISC, supported 20 undergraduate English students in conducting informational interviews with 21 alumni from their course, now working across diverse sectors. 

Rationale: Students in non-vocational disciplines often navigate non-linear career pathways, leading to anxiety about career decision-making. This project aimed to enhance research culture by embedding engaged participatory research within career education, fostering student confidence and professional preparedness. 

Aims: The initiative explored English QUB UG alumni’s transitions to employment or further study, identifying key challenges and support needs. It also assessed the impact of student-led research on participants’ career confidence and transferable skills. 

Methods: Using an engaged participatory approach, students were trained to conduct qualitative career-focused interviews. They co-designed questions to explore alumni perspectives on career readiness, skill application, and gaps in their degree experience. Pre- and post-project surveys assessed students’ confidence and skill development. 

Results: Alumni insights reinforced their role as active contributors within a sustainable careers ecosystem, influencing curriculum and institutional career strategies. Students reported increased confidence in digital communication, a clearer understanding of career pathways, and reduced career-related anxiety. 

Conclusions: This initiative exemplifies how participatory research enhances research culture, embeds career education within the curriculum, and fosters cross-cohort collaboration. Findings inform best practices for integrating alumni insights into sustainable, student-centred research cultures in HE.
