SheSpeaks: Science Journeys – Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Scientists
Author: Mona Soroudi
Organisation: University College Dublin - Energy Institute
The workforce exhibits a relatively balanced distribution of males and females (52% vs. 48%), yet women remain significantly underrepresented in Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) roles, holding only 18% of these positions. This disparity highlights the ongoing gender gap in STEM fields and calls for focused initiatives to address this imbalance.
This study aims to inspire young girls by providing relatable role models and challenging stereotypes discouraging women from entering STEM fields. It introduces SheSpeaks: Science Journeys, an event series in which NexSys female researchers from different strands, such as Cities and Communities, Energy Systems, Transport, Offshore Wind, and Water, share their professional experiences in an engaging, non-technical manner.
These boosting research culture events follow Jeremy Harmer’s Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) model. Students begin with a game-based activity introducing the researcher’s background. In the study phase, researchers present their work using storytelling and interactive discussions. The activation phase allows students to create drawings of key takeaways that will be showcased in a virtual gallery on the NexSys website. Pre- and post-event surveys will assess impact and ensure program sustainability.
This program is expected to boost the confidence of female researchers and students, foster public engagement, improve science communication, and strengthen critical thinking skills.
In conclusion, SheSpeaks: Science Journeys drives systemic change by partnering with STEM Women, engaging media, and creating long-term educational content via digital hub. This initiative empowers young girls, promotes gender balance, and contributes to a more diverse and inclusive STEM future.
