Research Managers as Architects of Impact: Strengthening the Profession through CARDEA
Research managers are key figures in the research ecosystem, yet their role across our
Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) remains fragmented. Despite the increasing
demands placed on research managers, structured training opportunities and professional
development pathways are still limited. The CARDEA Project, led by University College
Cork (UCC) and funded by Horizon Europe, seeks to address this gap by equipping research
managers with the skills, knowledge, and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of
modern research and to position research management as an attractive and sustainable career
pathway.
At the heart of CARDEA is a competency-based framework designed to enhance key
research management skills, including transversal skills, technical proficiency and
stakeholder engagement. Through a digital academy, the project offers free micro-credential
training designed by experts from across the consortium. These tailored modules provide
flexible, accessible learning opportunities to support the professionalisation of research
management across the European Research Area.
This session will showcase key deliverables from the project to date, including RM Comp
and the CARDEA Academy, highlighting how these resources contribute to developing
research management as a recognised profession. Joined by our partners from the University
of Liège, we will offer insights into collaboration within a pan-European consortium,
illustrating how partners across diverse institutional and national contexts work together to
achieve CARDEA’s objectives.
By strengthening research support structures, CARDEA aims to create clearer career
pathways for research managers and ensure that the profession is valued and well-supported
within the research ecosystem.
