Decarbonising Energy
UCD researchers are paving the way in the Energy Transition, spearheading vital research in grid technology and sustainable power.
Transition to Net Zero
To achieve a transition to a net-zero energy system, we need to develop alternative energy sources to replace fossil fuels, ensuring our energy infrastructure, our economies and our communities can accommodate higher shares of renewables Ireland’s energy system is far from simple, with complex interdependencies between electricity, gas, data, transport, water and other infrastructures. (opens in a new window)UCD’s Energy Institute studies the system as a whole, and has developed a first-of-its-kind suite of integrated mathematical models to better understand how the energy system works, and how it can be decarbonised.
A renewables-led economy
The EMPowER project is conducting economic and technical modelling to help accelerate this transition. Through their research, the team are advising Government on the different factors that affect consumer uptake of new technologies, like heat pumps, electric vehicles and rooftop solar panels; the impact that these technologies will have on the grid; and Ireland’s ability to generate energy with higher shares of renewables. This directly informs Government strategy and targets, meaning decisions around climate action will be more effective and cost-efficient.
