Plan your research

Key actions to consider as you start to plan your research :

  • Research is central to the mission of the university, and your research plan should be a central part of your career plan. UCD HR provides guidance on Career Planning and Development.
  • Talk to your Head of School, Institute Director and/or mentor to further develop your research plan
  • Prepare one-page proposal(s)   to crystallise your ideas for research programmes or projects; these can be used to facilitate discussion with your colleagues
  • Twice a year, the Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact meets new members of staff and delivers an overview of Research and Innovation in the university. This is an ideal opportunity to meet the VP, their management team and other staff members of UCD Research and Innovation.
  • Most funding bodies now consider 'impact' a fundamental aspect of their research programmes. So it is important that you think about impact early when planning your research. Use the tools and resources on the UCD Impact Toolkit to help you plan for impact.

Some research does not require funding, but in most cases you will need research funding to pay salaries and stipends and to cover equipment, consumables, travel and other costs of research.
