Chairs Responsibilities
The responsibility of the Chair is to Oversee the examination process of the thesis, from start to finish. They will provide the timelines to the Examiners.
The Chair will ensure
- that the Examiners have access to the thesis, and tasks.
- that all steps of the examination are conducted in accordance with the University’s regulations and guidelines.
- that the Preliminary Reports are completed and exchanged amongst all members of the Examination Committee, via the eThesis examination system.
- that all tasks are completed in a timely fashion
-
Notes:
- The Examiners must submit their Preliminary Report to open the portal for Joint Degree Report submission and also revised Final Thesis upload.
- There is no draft facility for Preliminary or Joint Degree Reports.
- There is a strict 4k byte limit on all sections of the report. Exceeding the byte limit will generate an error message.
- Using the back arrow when submitting reports will cause duplication of reports thereby blocking the workflow.
- In the case of a Viva Voce, it is expected that this assessment will be planned as ‘in person’. If it is proposed to have any member of the Examination Committee/the student attend virtually then the Chair must seek permission from the GRB as soon as this need is identified and in advance of the Viva (as per the Graduate Studies website). Such requests may not be unusual for the external examiner but the virtual attendance of the Chair, Internal Examiner or the student should only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
