Resources

There's no shortage of policy-engagement guides on the web. On this page, we've curated a selection across different topics, like identifying stakeholders, writing for a policy audience, achieving policy impact.

Policy engagement is in the midst of a boom, not just here in Ireland, but around the world, with new resources, new tools and new advice being published every week. So this is really the tip of the iceberg: a quick search will turn up dozens more resources from other policy bodies, universities, funders and intermediaries.

Many of these resources hail from institutions in the UK, where policy impact is arguably more firmly embedded in the fabric of the research-policy ecosystem. Although the advice is usually given in the context of the UK policy, many of the concepts – like stakeholder analysis and relationship-building – are transferable to the Irish policymaking system.

We don’t expect you to wade through every document, website and video. Instead, we recommend that you start by understanding the basic principles of research-policy engagement, then dig into the more nuanced advice when you understand what it is you’d like to achieve.
