Land-Finance-State Nexus
Land-Finance-State Nexus
The world has been rapidly urbanising. Much of the urban population growth occurs in the Global South and East, particularly in China. This project seeks to answer the following questions: How was China able to urbanise at such an unprecedented scale and speed? How does urbanisation transform the relationships between the state, society, and capital?
The project centres on land monetisation—a key motivation for Chinese local governments in driving rapid urbanisation—which, in turn, has created significant imbalances in the Chinese economy and reshaped state-society relations. By examining mega urbanisation projects in three Chinese cities, this project investigates how land was expropriated, commodified, and monetised. In doing so, it offers new insights into the political economy of managed speculative urbanisation in China.
