The University College Dublin (UCD) College of Science has developed their first micro-credential ‘Public Science Communication’, designed to equip scientists and researchers with the skills necessary to effectively communicate scientific knowledge to the public.
This new micro-credential responds to an increasing demand for clear, accurate, and engaging dissemination of scientific information. As society faces critical issues such as climate change, health crisis, and technological advancements, the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to non-specialist audiences has never been more important.
Bridging the Gap Between Science and Society
This micro-credential aims to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the public, fostering a greater understanding of science’s role in everyday life. It is also funded under the Human Capital Initiative Learner Fee Subsidy Scheme, meaning the fee is reduced by 50% for eligible learners. This has been introduced to enable more learners to address critical skills gaps and engage with lifelong learning through short, flexible courses known as micro-credentials.
Dr. Craig Slattery, Assistant Professor of Regulatory Affairs & Toxicology and Course Leader, emphasized the importance of this micro-credential: “Good science communicators act as a bridge between life-changing, sometimes complex research ideas, and the public’s understanding and appreciation of their value to society. In a world driven by information, science communicators who formulate their messages with clarity, relatability and passion, will inspire curiosity, foster informed decision-making, and empower society to engage meaningfully with science and research.”
Public Science Communication Micro-Credential Syllabus
The Public Science Communication micro-credential offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers a range of topics essential for effective communication. It is intended for people wishing to develop their own communications skills to a broad range of audiences, with specific emphasis on effective communication of scientific information and research findings.
Upon completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the importance of communicating science to non-specialist audiences
- Describe various approaches for conveying complex scientific information to non-specialist audiences.
- Critically evaluate science communication strategies.
- Explain the impact of information and misinformation on the public, governments, and policymakers.
- Present their own research to a public audience in an accessible and engaging manner.
Flexible, Accredited Learning
The course is designed to be flexible and accessible, catering to professionals at various stages of their careers. It includes online lectures/seminars, workshops, critical reflection, and learner presentations. Participants can learn at their own pace while applying their skills in real-world scenarios.
On successful completion of the micro-credential, you will receive a UCD micro-credential certificate and supplement, outlining your learning outcomes and grade. You will also gain 5 ECTS credits. This qualification is expected to enhance career prospects and professional development for scientists, researchers, and educators.
