This 30 credit programme will lead to a graduate certificate in Interventional Imaging and Practice. It will cover the fundamental aspects of Interventional Radiology; current IR technology; radiation safety; patient care and IR procedures. This programme is designed for radiographers working in the speciality of Interventional Radiology.
It aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of both the service and the clinical practice within IR. It will equip students to respond to the rapidly changing and evolving nature of this Radiology sub-speciality.
This course is designed for radiographers currently working in IR, who wish to develop their knowledge and expertise in this field. Applicants should have at least one year post-qualification experience and be working in the IR department over the duration of the course
There will be a systematic approach to discussing the interventional procedures currently performed in Irish hospitals focussing on promoting both professional knowledge and quality of service in the interventional radiology environment. This programme aims to develop each student’s knowledge and understanding of the aetiology of the disease processes that present in the IR department, their compatibility with radiological intervention, the possible procedural risks and complications and the expected outcomes for each patient. It will demonstrate the integration and application of imaging procedures, technologies and medical devices in the treatment and management of disease. It will also provide each student with a comprehensive knowledge of cross sectional anatomy
Furthermore this programme aims to enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the physical principles of a range of IR technologies and how these contribute to disease assessment, management and follow-up. A focus will be placed on current and future trends in IR imaging and an appreciation of the associated advantages together with the inherent pitfalls and limitations. Topics addressed include; image acquisition, image processing, image manipulation, clinical applications, dosimetry and equipment design in the IR environment. It also aims to develop an understanding of the importance of quality assurance for IR technology.
The Course is divided up into four modules; one 10 credit module in Patient Care and Interventional Procedures, one 10 credit module in Radiation Safety, one five credit module in cross sectional imaging and one 5 credit module in IR technology.
These modules will predominantly be delivered in an e-learning environment. The teaching and learning strategies are designed to encourage autonomous reflective practitioners who can further develop their personal and professional skills within a supportive framework.
Applicants must hold a BSc or equivalent in Diagnostic Radiography; have at least one year post-qualification experience with clinical experience working in the IR department.
