Dr Brendan Kelly wins a Clinical Innovation Award 2024

Congratulations to UCD School of Medicine alumnus, Dr Brendan Kelly, on being a Health Innovation Hub Ireland Clinical Innovation Award Winner 2024. Dr Kelly is Fellow in Paediatric Radiology, Great Ormond St Hospital for Sick Children, London. Dr Kelly’s team uses the model, NeuFormer to provide faster and more accurate diagnoses for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

This is an innovative AI approach to the detection of radiologic progression on MRI in People with MS. The model uses vision transformers in a new way to increase detection of small lesions and achieve superior generalisability compared to alternative models.

Dr Kelly is the NDTP Dr Richard Steevens and ESOR Fellow in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Paediatric Radiology at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London UK. He completed his PhD in the use of Artificial Intelligence for Change Detection in Longitudinal Imaging Data at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics UCD in 2024. In 2020, he was an HRB Health Impact Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University, California, USA. He holds BSc and MSc qualifications in Medical Imaging and MBBCh from UCD. His research interests are in the clinical application of AI to Radiology.

Dr Kelly states, ''AI has the power to revolutionise how we approach chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis—helping to refine diagnostics, track disease progression, and personalise treatments. This award inspires me to keep pushing boundaries and exploring what’s next for AI in radiology and more importantly deliver a faster and more accurate diagnosis for people with MS. Thank you to HIHI and everyone who has supported this journey. Here’s to continuing to innovate and make a difference.''
