Dr McCarthy is a graduate of the UCD Class of 2005. After completing his Specialist Registrar training in Radiology at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, he undertook Fellowship training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology in Boston. He has held Faculty positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and most recently at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he works in the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Additionally, he is a member of the Core Faculty for the Principal Clinical Experience (PCE) at Harvard Medical School.
He is board-certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology. He performs a wide range of minimally invasive procedures, with a particular interest in complex hepatobiliary interventions, including percutaneous biliary endoscopy.
His research interests include a variety of medical informatics topics, including telemedicine, machine learning and large language models, point-of-care electronic safety tools, medical simulation, and virtual and augmented reality. He is the principal investigator for a randomized controlled trial assessing the impact of virtual and augmented reality on patient satisfaction when used for anxiolysis during image-guided procedures.
He lives in the Boston suburbs with his wife and four children.
