The event, attended by staff and graduate research students, was opened by Associate Dean for EDI Associate Professor Marguerite Clyne. Dr. Clyne welcomed all attendees and outlined how important it was to celebrate IWD and introduced our newly appointed Associate Dean for Research, Innovation and Impact in the School, Professor Catherine Godson.
Professor Godson spoke about the importance of EDI in the workplace and highlighted the work of women researchers in the School, including two recent SFI Frontiers for the Future grant awardees - Assistant Professor Melinda Halasz and Assistant Professor Carol Aherne. Also, Assistant Professor Fiona McGillicuddy, who was project lead in the team that won the UCD Start-up of the Year Award for Met Health, an emerging medtech start-up venture focused on transforming obesity care.
Posters were on display showcasing some of the work of the EDI committee and the Athena SWAN self-assessment team who are currently working on an application for the School to renew our bronze award. Attendees were able to submit their responses to questions posed on a mood board about how the EDI committee can best support them.
The School is committed to its EDI strategic objectives and the committee is always open to ideas and feedback: edi.medicine@ucd.ie
The theme of 2022’s IWD is BREAKING THE BIAS.
The School of Medicine EDI Committee was delighted to invite the two speakers at this years virtual event:
Prof Butler and Dr Scanlan joined us to reflect on
UCD School of Medicine EDI Committee hosted a really energising and interesting conversation between Dr Fiona McGillicuddy, Assistant Professor, Cardiometabolic Research Group, Diabetes Complications Research Centre, UCD and Dr Gabrielle Colleran, Consultant Paediatric Radiologist and Vice-President IHCA on IWD 2021. The conversation focused on work-life balance, C-19 childcare challenges, where women are (or not) in C-19 leadership roles and engaging more women in leadership. Dr Colleran prompted us to think about the systemic patriarchal inequality, the power of surrounding ourselves with energising, positive, solutions orientated women, building a more inclusive, diverse, representative society and always keeping another person’s dignity at the centre of communication.
