Associate Dean, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Associate Professor Marguerite Clyne is UCD School of Medicine Associate Dean for Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). She was the lead applicant on the School's successful Athena SWAN application for a Bronze award in 2019 and she chaired the self assessment team that did the work and wrote that application. Since 2019 she has chaired the School EDI committee. She is a member of the College of Health and Agricultural Science EDI committee and of the School Executive Management Committee. Previously, she was the Associate Dean for Research Innovation and Impact in the School (2016-2019). She has chaired the Biomedical Research Degree committee (2008-2016) and was a member of the College of Life Sciences and College of Science graduate research boards.

Dr Clyne is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin where she did her primary degree and PhD in Microbiology. Following her PhD she worked in Dublin City University before moving to the Dept. of Paediatrics in UCD based in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin to work as a research scientist. She was appointed as a special lecturer in Paediatrics in 2000 and as a permanent member of faculty in the UCD School of Medicine in 2004. She teaches microbiology and cell biology to Medicine and Science students and also runs the Translational Medicine programme for graduate research students.

Dr Clyne’s research interest is in microbial pathogenesis and how bacteria interact with humans to cause disease. She has a special interest in the enteric pathogens Helicobacter pylori and Campylobacter jejuni and she has also worked with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the eukaryotic parasite Cryptosporidium. Her work has been supported by grants from Science Foundation Ireland, the Health Research Board, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, the Wellcome Trust, the Irish Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology, the Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and The Children's Medical and Research Foundation.
