
Biomedical Engineering involves applying engineering principles to advancements in healthcare and medicine. It is an interdisciplinary field that requires knowledge of both medicine and engineering. Students can take individual modules or pursue a full Master's-level degree.
The primary aim of this discipline is to give engineers the knowledge to apply science and technology to the solution of healthcare problems, particularly through the design, development and manufacture of medical devices. Regulatory issues in medical device technology are also addressed. The school has a research history in areas such as brain injury, the modelling of heart valves and blood flow, prosthetic design and testing, and bone fracture and repair.
