Prof Jim Kinsella

Professor of Rural Development and Agricultural Extension

Jim Kinsella is the Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin (UCD). He began his career as a volunteer development worker with an international NGO in Ethiopia and Somalia and later in Tanzania and Kenya. He completed his PhD on farm household decision making processes and joined the staff of UCD in 1995 where he has lectured on a range of subjects from: sustainable agriculture and rural development to agricultural extension. He has established a range of postgraduate programmes and his research work encompasses rural livelihoods analysis and agricultural innovation.

Associate Professor Monica Gorman

Associate Professor of Agricultural Extension and Innovation

Monica Gorman is Associate Professor of Agricultural Extension and Innovation in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin (UCD). Prior to joining the faculty in 2013, she worked for more than 20 years in international development. She completed her PhD on multifunctional agriculture with a particular focus on the influence of gender dynamics within farm households on livelihood opportunities. She has developed and coordinates postgraduate Masters programmes for agricultural science graduates who want to work in farm advisory and agricultural education roles.

Dr Tomás Russell

Assistant Professor of Agricultural Extension and Innovation

Dr Tomás Russell is Assistant Professor in Agricultural Extension and Innovation at the School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin. He is Programme Director for the Masters in Agricultural Extension and Innovation. He completed his BSc in Land Management in Agriculture at Waterford Institute of Technology before completing his PhD at University College Dublin looking at the role of agricultural extension in supporting farmer decision making on succession and inheritance. Prior to taking up his position in UCD, he worked as an Agricultural Development Officer in Teagasc during his PhD.

Dr Sinéad Flannery

Assistant Professor in Behavioral Science

Dr. Sinéad Flannery is an Assistant Professor in Behavioural Science in Agriculture in the School of Agriculture and Food Science. Sinéad completed her BAgrSc in Animal Science at University College Dublin before completing her PhD at University College Dublin. Sinéad's PhD thesis investigated the professional development needs of agricultural educators within Irish advisory and extension services. She developed a 'pedagogical competency framework' for agricultural educators to address their training needs within the vocational education and training sector, with transferability to the third level education system. During her PhD, Sinéad obtained funding as a Visiting Research Scholar in the Education and Competence Studies Group at Wageningen University in the Netherlands to conduct field research in agricultural educator competence. Sinéad's research interests are predominantly in the area of behavioural science, specifically agricultural education and farm health, welfare and safety
