‘Culture Night’ session for the Irish Countrywomen’s Association

November 2024

Special talk “Yokoso Nihon e: Kotoba, Connections and Ocha” was organised by Prof. Orla Doyle (UCD School of Economics) for this year’s Culture Night @ Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA Sandyford Guild) and Assoc. Prof. Kodate gave a guest lecture.

Responding to the invitation from Prof. Doyle and her mother Fionnuala, a member of the ICA, Assoc. Prof. Naonori Kodate (Dir., UCD Centre for Japanese Studies/ co-Director, Public Policy Programme in UCD) gave a talk entitled “Yokoso Nihon e: Kotoba, Connections and Ocha” (Welcome to Japan: Language, Connections and Tea) on the 18th of November, 2024, at St Tiernan’s Community School in Balally, Dublin.

Despite wet and cold weather on a Monday night, many members came and joined the talk, full of enthusiasm and curiosity. After being introduced by Prof. Doyle (UCD School of Economics/Geary Institute for Public Policy) who recent visited Japan with her mum and family, Dr Kodate spoke about his family, Japanese’ culture, religions, history, food/green tea, Ireland-Japan bilateral relations and Lafcadio Hearn-related sites in Ireland and Japan. With a little quiz and interactions throughout, it became a very lively session.

Special thanks to the organisers, Ms Valerie Morton and St Tiernan’s Community School, in particular.
