Module Types and Roles

This section covers information on how to gain/provide access to modules, along with where and how to do it, to help with module delivery and grading. This information may be helpful for School/College administrative staff and module coordinators.

Module Types & Roles

Type of Module Purpose of Module How to request this module

Academic Module

All credit bearing modules, delivered by faculty to students of the University

A new instance of each module is created dynamically for each teaching period in which the module is taught.
No intervention is required to have an academic module created.

Resit Module A (new) module offering for students who are resitting No intervention is required to have an academic module created.
Sandbox Module A personal module for each staff/faculty member of the University, for their own use when training or experimenting with different features and functionality.

All staff will have a sandbox module automatically generated for them, the sandbox module is named in the form “ConnectUsername_sbox”

To request the addition of (up to 4) test student accounts to your sandbox module contact IT Services
*Test accounts cannot be added to any other module type.

Programme Space A space that is being used to provide administrative resources to all students on the same programme, managed by Programme Office staff

To request a programme module please contactIT Services

To request additional staff to be added to a Programme Space, the College Office Director should contactIT Services, specifying the programme code and usernames of the staff requiring access.

Explore Modules

A non-credit bearing module that a student may optionally choose to take.

Explore modules are typically for the purpose of delivering extra/co--curricular learning materials to students and have broad appeal.

To request the creation of an Explore module please contactIT Services , a form will be sent to you requesting additional information.
Booking Centre Modules A non-credit bearing module that a staff member of UCD may choose to avail of as part of their development or training.

To request the creation of a Booking Centre module please contactIT Services, youwill be sent a form to request creation of the module.

IT Services will create the Booking Centre event, and will return the booking link to the requestor.

Module Enrolment Process

Module Coordinator

This role has complete module oversight, and is deemed the data controller of the module

  • Only one module coordinator per module
  • This role has Instructor access to the module
  • This role appears in the class list as “Module Coordinator”
  • This role has visibility of an additional widget, theModule Overview Widget    

Module Coordinator details are taken straight from the CMS.

This role is not assigned via MAMs.

Lecturer / Co Lecturer

This role should be used for a faculty member who is teaching on a module

  • This role has Instructor access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Lecturer”        

This role is assigned by the Module Coordinator to a faculty member via MAMs.

Teaching Assistant

This role should be used for a Teaching Assistant on a module

  • This role has Instructor access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Teaching Assistant”        

This role is assigned by the Module Coordinator/School Administrator to a faculty member via MAMs.

Assistant Grader

This role should be used for someone who is authorised to grade student assessment items

  • This role has Instructor access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Grader”     

This role is assigned by the Module Coordinator/School Administrator to a faculty member via MAMs

Tutor

This role should be used to give a Tutor access to a module

  • This role has Instructor access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Tutor”        

This role is assigned by the Module Coordinator/School Administrator to a faculty member via MAMs

Module Assistant

This role should be used to give a staff member access to a module

  • This role has Instructor access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Module Assistant”        

This role is assigned by the Module Coordinator to a staff member via MAMs.

Extern Examiner

This role is used solely for a Subject Extern

  • This role has Instructor access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Extern Examiner”        

This role is assigned by a School Administrator via MAMs.

Academic Support

This role is used for staff in a supporting role

  • This role has modified instructor access to modules, (this role cannot enter or edit grades)
  • This role is cascading, and is granted at the level of an org unit, e.g. a School or College        
  • This role does not appear on a module class list

This role is granted by request via(opens in a new window) IT Services from the Head of School, School Head of T&L or College VPT&L

Instructor

This role is used to give instructor access to other module types, outside of Banner

  • This role has Instructor access to the module/space
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Instructor”
  • This role is typically used in Programme Spaces

This role is granted via request from College Office Director to(opens in a new window) IT Services, including the Programme Code (as per Banner)

Student

This role is used for students enrolled on academic/credit bearing modules.

  • This role has student access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “Student”

Students are automatically added to credit bearing modules via an automated provisioning process using Banner module enrolments.

SE Student

This role is assigned to learners who self enrol to an Explore module

  • This role has student access to the module
  • This role appears in the classlist as “SEStudent”
  • Classlist is not visible to SEStudents

When a learner (student) enrols to an Explore module they are assigned the SE Student role.

Test Student Account

The purpose of this role is to allow a user to test functionality from a student perspective.

  • This role can only exist in a users sandbox module

This role type needs to be requested via(opens in a new window) IT Services including the user’s UCD Connect ID for their sbox reference.
