ICS launches the first and only Data Journalism postgrad in Ireland
Data Journalism has arrived in Ireland.
Data is key for innovation across industry and is now indispensable for journalists and news organisations as it provides material for investigative work and storytelling. Data Journalism is about finding hidden stories in data, analysing and scrutinising it to investigate the story, and communicating that story to the public.
Identifying Data Journalism as one of the most important applications of data, information science, and social sciences, and its rapidly growing importance in newsrooms, the School of Information and Communication Studies at UCD has embarked on an important journey to help grow and strengthen Data Journalism in Ireland. The school has added Data Journalism as one of its primary research and teaching areas, and is taking on a number of significant steps in taking Data Journalism forward in ireland, and to help it grow in Europe and internationally.
This year the school conducted the (opens in a new window)1st Global Data Journalism Survey, and has two more immediate developments coming up:
1- The (opens in a new window)1st European Data and Computational Journalism Conference.
2- The launch of the first and only (opens in a new window)Data Journalism postgraduate programme in Ireland.

UCD hosts the 1st European Data & Computational Journalism Conference
The School of Information and Communication Studies at University College Dublin is hosting the 1st European Data and Computational Journalism Conference.
The conference is a day and a half event and held on 6th and 7th July 2017. Day one is a single track conference with distinguished speakers from academia and news industry. Day two provides two half day parallel tracks. Track 1 is an ‘Introduction to Data Journalism’ workshop, and Track 2 is a ‘Computational Journalism’conference.
UCD School of Information and Communication Studies is co-organising this conference in collaboration with Cardiff University’s schools of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, and Computer Science and Informatics. The conference is sponsored by Google News Lab and RTÉ.
While Data Journalism and Computer Assisted Reporting have seen their strongest community in the US, this conference is believed to mark an important milestone for Data Journalism in Europe.

UCD’s School of Information and Communication Studies launches the first and only Data Journalism postgraduate programme in Ireland
The School of Information and Communication Studies at University College Dublin is pleased to announce the launch of a new degree programme in Data Journalism.This postgraduate professional certification programme is specifically designed and targeted for professional journalists and journalism graduates. The programme is offered as a part-time course over two semesters.
This Degree will be the first of its kind in Ireland and a unique offering in Europe and internationally.
Data Journalism is one of the most desirable and in high demand new skills in newsrooms these days, and a professional certificate in Data Journalism will provide graduates with increased opportunities for employment in today’s rapidly growing newsrooms and news organisations.
