Family Matters Webinar: The Carer's Path - 19th June, 13:00

This session will be an insightful and honest conversation with Charlie Beswick as she shares her personal journey of becoming a carer and the struggles she faced in accepting her new reality. Together we'll discuss:

  • Paths to Becoming a Carer– The different ways people take on a caring role, whether suddenly (e.g., due to an accident) or gradually (e.g., through a progressive illness).
  • Stages of Caring Responsibility:

o    Denial – A protective response or a result of cultural/societal norms.

o    Acknowledgement vs Acceptance – Understanding the difference and the power of each.

o    Advocacy – Finding your foundation before finding your voice.

  • Managing Big Emotions:

o    Guilt and the weight of responsibility.

o    Grief and ambiguous loss.

o    Identity shifts and the impact on self-worth.

  • Advocacy in Action:

o    Ensuring the needs and rights of both your loved one and yourself are met.

o    Navigating support at home, with family, professionals, and in the workplace.

  • Q&A Session– An opportunity to ask questions and share experiences.

This webinar will be delivered by Charlie Beswick. Charlie is mum to 19-year-old twins, Oliver and Harry, who was born with a rare craniofacial syndrome and is autistic. Charlie is the author of the best-selling book Our Altered Life. She is also an award-winning blogger and her family's story has been featured internationally on Sky TV and national press.
