MESSAGE Earth Institute Coffee Morning - April 2025 Event

On the 10th April 2025, MESSAGE organised a talk hosted by the UCD Earth Institute Coffee Morning Events. The talk was titled “Marine protected areas, blue carbon and vulnerable cultural landscapes: ongoing coastal, marine and energy research from the UCD MESSAGE Research Group”. 

MESSAGE members, George Hoppit, Saule Akhmetkaliyeva (both UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science) and Samantha Tobias (UCD School of Archaeology), all three gave a presentation on their respective ongoing research, relating to marine & coastal research. 

George Hoppit gave a talk on the Blue4All project, which brings together bottom-up and top-down approaches to Marine Protected Area management. 

Saule Akhmetkaliyeva discussed the BlueC project, with an interdisciplinary approach to the study of coastal blue carbon ecosystems, specifically the salt-marshes of Ireland. 

Samantha Tobiáš presented her PhD research on climate change vulnerability of cultural landscapes and intangible heritage, focusing on her community-based research and case study of Connemara.
