Professor Anding Zhu elected IEEE MTT-S President
Friday, 4 October, 2024
The world’s largest professional association for wireless and microwave technology, the(opens in a new window)IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S), has elected(opens in a new window)Professor Anding Zhu as President.
A researcher at the UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Head of the RF & Microwave Research Group at University College Dublin, Professor Zhu will take up the role in 2026 after he was named President-Elect.
“I am deeply honoured to have been elected as President of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society,” he said.
“This is a significant milestone in my professional journey, and I am excited to serve and contribute to the advancement of our international community.
“This election is a testament to my leadership skills and the contributions I have made to the field, and I am grateful for the trust placed in me by my international peers,” he continued.
Professor Zhu is the second person from Ireland elected President of the MTT-S, and his presidency is also the second time that a UCD academic has been elected to lead the large international organisation.
In 2018, Professor Tom Brazil, from the UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, served as its President.
With over 13,000 members across 200 chapters worldwide, the MTT-S has worked to promote the development of microwave technologies since it was established in 1952.
Its areas of interest are foundational for aerospace systems, wireless communication, remote sensing, biomedical engineering, consumer electronics, and most other modern technologies.
In 2021, Professor Zhu was elevated to Fellow by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the highest level of membership awarded by the organisation, and title reserved for those with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in the association's areas of interests.
The same year, he was also the recipient of the IEEE MTT-S Microwave Prize.
His research expertise is in the area of nonlinear modelling and characterisation of radio frequency (RF) circuits and systems with a particular emphasis on digital linearisation of RF power amplifiers for wireless communications.
He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and received research funding from various sources including awards from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), European Space Agency (ESA), Enterprise Ireland (EI) and industry donations.
In addition to his leadership of the UCD RF & Microwave Research Group, Professor Zhu is a Principal Investigator in the SFI Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications – CONNECT.
He served as the Secretary of Administrative Committee (AdCom) of IEEE MTT-S in 2018, has been an Elected Member of MTT-S AdCom since 2019, and is currently the Chair of the Technical Coordination & Future Directions Committee (TCFDC).
