Discovery host Prof. Akram Alshawabkeh, Director, NU PROTECT Center

The UCD Institute for Discovery was honoured to co-host Prof. Akram Alshawabkeh, Senior Vice Provost, and Director, PROTECT Superfund Research Center, at Northeastern University in September alongside the UCD Insight Centre for Data Analytics.
Akram has led PROTECT, a pan-American consortia research program, which aims to understand how chemicals can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth and impaired fetal growth, in Puerto Rico.

UCD Cancer Research Symposium

The bi-annual UCD Cancer Research Symposium, organised by UCD Research with the All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI) and the UCD Cancer Trials Cluster took place on June 7, 2024. The AI Healthcare Hub chaired a session on AI in Cancer Research. The event concluded with a keynote on AI for more effective Cancer Diagnosis from Discovery Visiting Professor Manuel Salto-Tellez, Queens University Belfast.

Ana Le Chevillier is a finalist in 2023 Young AI Role Model of the Year 2023

Ana Le Chevillier, Clinical Research Manager of AI_PREMie, is a finalist in the 2023 Young AI Role Model of the Year at this year’s AI Ireland Awards.
AI_PREMie is the multi-award winning decision support tool for diagnosing the dangerous pregnancy condition preeclampsia. It is the flagship project at University College Dublin’s AI Healthcare Hub (AIHH), which Le Chevillier also manages.

AI_PREMie has won the AI Innovation of the Year at the inaugural Public Sector Digital Transformation Awards, which celebrate the incredible achievements of the Irish public sector digital transformation.
The black tie gala event was held in Dublin's Shelbourne hotel.

UCD’s NAIXUS membership “puts Ireland on the map”

University College Dublin has been awarded membership of NAIXUS, a global network of Artificial Intelligence Excellence Centres in Sustainable Development. "UCD has joined a growing list of partners from over 40 universities, institutes, and foundations worldwide who will collaborate on harnessing AI to achieve the United Nations SDGs," says Professor Patricia Maguire.

“If I go on a hike, my legs could be killing me for a week.”

Ashleigh Kiernan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) aged 7, in December 2010. Her mother noticed “little purple spots” appearing on her skin, says Ashleigh, which were quickly identified as the petechiae rash that can be, she adds, “one of the signs for leukaemia”.

"After chemotherapy I was given a 5% chance of fathering a child - it’s a miracle.”

“Miracles do happen,” says Karl Corcoran, 25, from Longwood, Co. Meath, as he and his partner Leah prepare to welcome their first child this month. Before he had even begun treatment for his High Grade B-Cell Lymphoma in January 2021, Karl says he was given a 5% chance - “absolute best case scenario” - of fathering a biological child.
