My research lab is focused on understanding the interactions and processes that contribute to the development and progression of cancer, in particular haematopoietic malignancies, with the view to identifying novel therapeutic targets for the development of more effective cancer therapies as well as non-invasive biomarkers for disease diagnosis and monitoring.
The bone marrow microenvironment facilitates the survival, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic cells. The microenvironment is comprised of fibroblast-like bone marrow stromal cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts which secrete soluble factors and extracellular vesicles (EVs) that mediate these functions. This bone marrow microenvironment also serves as an important environment for the progression of haematopoietic malignancies such as acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma (MM) and also for epithelial tumour cells that metastasise to bone.
