Work Packages

Tuesday, 14 October, 2025

The FeNiX project is structured into five interconnected work packages (WPs). Together, they combine experimental research, modelling, and feasibility studies to overcome the key bottlenecks of the hydrogen-to-biomethane process.

  • WP1 – Metal cofactor design and optimisation - biological output assessment: Screening and testing iron and nickel cofactors to improve microbial performance.
  • WP2 – Optimisation of hydrogen gas mass transfer: Designing and evaluating novel hydrogen delivery methods.
  • WP3 – Long-term testing of biological performance of the engineered cofactors: Operating and optimising experimental systems under conventional and engineered conditions.
  • WP4 – Mathematical modelling of gas transfer and biomethanation processes: Developing CFD and bioprocess models to guide process optimisation and scale-up.
  • WP5 – Techno-economic feasibility of hydrogen-to-biomethane in the Irish context: Evaluating feasibility, costs, and sustainability impacts in the Irish context.
