Strengthening Patient and Public Involvement: Reflections and Actions

As September ended and October began, we immersed ourselves in Patient and Public Involvement through the HSE Public and Partnership Conference and the PPI Ignite Festival. These events brought together patients, carers, healthcare professionals, and policy-makers, offering inspiration, lessons, and encouragement on the journey toward authentic partnership in clinical care and research. At UCD Cancer Trials Cluster, we were proud to contribute through our work to these two events and to strengthening patient and public involvement in cancer research and care.

FAIR Trials: Facilitating Access, Inclusion and Representation in Oncology Clinical Trials

We are happy to announce the start of a new research project, FAIR Trials: Facilitating Access, Inclusion and Representation in Oncology Trials.
This project aims to enhance a diverse representation in cancer clinical trials and therefore improve patient care across all patient demographics. We will deploy quantitative and qualitative methods to explore and analyse the social, cultural, economic and psychological barriers that hinder participation in cancer clinical trials and will propose a plan of action to overcome these barriers.

At the Front of Innovation in Blood Cancers

Dr. Liam Smyth, Consultant Haematologist at St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH), is at the forefront of advancing blood cancer treatment through his work in malignant haematology and immunotherapy. Dr. Smyth supports the growing haematology clinical trials program at SVUH. In partnership with the UCD Cancer Trials Cluster, the hospital’s Haematology Research Group has increased exponentially its clinical research portfolio in the last year. Current trials focus on innovative therapies, aligning with global efforts to improve outcomes for patients with haematological malignancies.

Global Clinical Trial Guidelines Modernised with ICH GCP E6(R3)

The International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) has officially released the long-awaited revision to its Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines: ICH GCP E6(R3).

In collaboration with the UCD Clinical Research Centre, we’ve co-authored a summary of the newly updated global clinical trial guidelines – ICH GCP E6(R3).

Science meets Lived Experience: Patients Shaping Health Research in Ireland

In this interview, we speak with Jim, a retired project manager from County Kildare who is now a dedicated Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) contributor. With a long-standing commitment to volunteering, he first encountered PPI through a hospital poster in 2020. Since then, he has become an active voice in a wide range of research initiatives, from cancer studies to national health data projects. Here, he shares how his personal experiences have shaped his involvement, the impact he’s made, and why he believes PPI is essential to research.

UCD Festival 2025

Last Saturday, 7th June, we took part in the UCD Festival 2025, a lively and inclusive celebration of learning, culture, and community spirit right here on campus. The festival attracted over 18,000 visitors and featured more than 130 free events spread across eight themed zones, offering something for everyone, no matter their age or interests. We were delighted to welcome so many people to the stand at the Clinical Research Centre.

Gráinne O'Kane Appointed New Director of UCD Cancer Cluster

Professor Gráinne O’Kane has been appointed Director of the UCD Cancer Cluster, succeeding Professor Michaela Higgins. O’Kane aims to build on the cluster’s strong foundation to enhance its national and international role in cancer research and clinical trials while continuing her clinical work at St Vincent’s University Hospital.

“Cut From The Same Cloth” is the title of a fascinating initiative blending art, science, and community engagement. The project is led by UCD Conway Institute Manager (Communications & Education), Elaine Quinn, UCD Professor Amanda McCann, and textile artist Lorna Donlon, with a focus on fostering connections between minority communities.

Breast Cancer Research Study: CAMBRIA-2

This study is for patients who have already had surgery and finished their first treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, if needed. Researchers want to see if a drug, called camizestrant (AZD9833), can do a better job at preventing breast cancer from coming back compared to the current standard of care anti-hormone treatments called aromatase inhibitors.
You can join the CAMBRIA-2 study at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH), Mater Private Hospital (MPH).
and St Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH).

MK-2870: Exploring a New Therapy for Women with Recurrent Cervical Cancer

A new international clinical trial,MK-2870, is now open for women with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer who have already received standard treatment. This study is exploring a promising new treatment called sacituzumab tirumotecan (MK-2870) to see if it can help women live longer and feel better compared to current second-line therapies.
Women in Ireland can participate in this trial at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) in Dublin.

Results from Phase III OASIS-4 Trial

Results from Phase III OASIS-4 Trial shows that elinzanetant significantly decreases the occurrence of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms linked to endocrine therapy in breast cancer patients.
Elinzanetant offers a new, targeted approach, specifically addressing the needs of women who experience menopause-like symptoms due to cancer treatment. With leading Irish hospitals actively involved in this international trial, patients in Ireland are contributing to, and standing to benefit from, meaningful advances in cancer care and quality of life.

Destiny 15: Study on People with Advanced Breast Cancer

Ireland is now part of a major international study called DESTINY‑Breast15, which brings new treatment options to people with types of breast cancer that until recently had very few targeted treatments available.
This trial is part of a new wave of research focused on breast cancers with little or no HER2 protein.
