Susan McDonnell
Assoc Prof Susan McDonnell is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering with over 30 years’ experience and expertise in the field of mammalian cell culture and bioprocessing. Susan has supervised 12 PhD research students to completion, 3 postdoctoral researchers and over 60 Taught Master’s students to date. Together the group have published over 100 articles in journals such as International Journal of Cancer, Bioprocess & Biosystems Engineering and BMC Biotechnology. She secured over €1.2 million in funding to date from organisations including Enterprise Ireland, Intertrade Ireland, Irish Research Council and UCD Advance PhD Core Scheme. Susan is the director of the MEngSc Biopharmaceutical Engineering programme since its inception in 2006 and in collaboration with Dr. Jessica Whelan and Prof Niall Barron has recently developed a Professional Certificate in Manufacturing of Cell & Gene Therapies and Vaccines in collaboration with the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) which will run in 2023. Susan currently delivers modules in Mammalian Cell Culture, Bioprocessing Technology, Tissue Engineering and Downstream Processing.
